WelshSusan M. Welsh, MD co-founded Snowdon Inc. in 2005 with her husband Professor William J. Welsh of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). At Snowdon, she serves as CEO and Principal Investigator of the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology Edison Innovation R&D Fund awarded to Snowdon in 2007.

Dr. Welsh is a former established clinician with 20 years of additional experience in the pharmaceutical industry.  She has an extensive track record related to the pharmaceutical product development and business development areas.  During her career she has have taken numerous NCEs/products through global development and regulatory approval.  Additionally, she has run several licensing organizations and executed a number of major licensing arrangements.

Dr. Welsh was formerly President of Linguagen (now Redpoint Bio) where she led the execution of a major $15 million deal with Givaudan, the world's top flavor company, for the company’s technology platform, helped to raise over $20 million in financing from private equity and was part of the senior team that completed a reverse merger to take the company public.  Prior to Linguagen, Dr. Welsh was Group Vice President, Global Project Management at Schering-Plough, where she was responsible for all aspects of global project management including the R&D licensing function.  She also served as a member of Schering-Plough's Pharmaceutical Leadership Board.  Previous to Schering-Plough, Dr. Welsh was Vice President, Strategic Customer Alliances at Johnson & Johnson, a business division that she established at J&J.  She also served as a member of J&J’s President’s Council.  Prior to J&J, Dr. Welsh held senior pharmaceutical development positions at Syntex, Alza, and SmithKline Beecham.

Before joining industry, Dr. Welsh served on active duty in the Royal Air Force (RAF) for 6 years.  She is a commissioned officer with the rank of Squadron Leader (retired).  Previous to the RAF, Dr. Welsh worked for the British National Health Service and completed a 4-year hospital residency in general medicine, surgery, neurology and psychiatry.  She additionally undertook a residency in OB-GYN and Family Planning. In 2007 Dr. Welsh was named as one of America’s Top Physicians by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.

Dr. Welsh received her medical and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Leeds, UK.  She earned a Master’s in Information Management from Washington University, St. Louis, and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley.  She holds clinical specialist qualifications in primary care medicine, OB-GYN, family planning, psychiatry, and pharmaceutical medicine plus a board in managed care from the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.  She is a certified Principal in UK primary care, a certified trainer of junior physicians in primary care medicine, a Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK), a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK), a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK) a Diplomate of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (UK) and a member of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Welsh serves on the National Council of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, Washington University, St. Louis and on the Advisory Board of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Washington University, St. Louis.  Dr. Welsh also serves as Chairman & CEO of Charis Pharmaceuticals, a company she founded in 2007.

WelshWilliam J. Welsh, Ph.D., founder of Snowdon Inc., holds the Norman H. Edelman Professorship in Bioinformatics and Computer-Aided Molecular Design in the Department of Pharmacology at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ-RWJMS), Piscataway, NJ. Concurrently, he serves as Director of both the UMDNJ Informatics Institute and the Environmental Bioinformatics and Computational Toxicology Center. Dr. Welsh has more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 20 pending or issued patents in the area of treatments for cancer, pain, and infectious diseases. He is a noted authority on the development and application of computational tools for drug discovery and predictive toxicology.

Snowdon has secured exclusive licensing rights to Intellectual Property (IP) developed in Dr. Welsh’s academic laboratory in several key therapeutic areas with substantial market potential. Exploiting its core capabilities in computer-aided molecular design and optimization, Snowdon is transforming this significant body of IP into prospective drug candidates.
